From Fields to Global Markets: Agriculture and TDAP Driving Pakistan’s Growth

With a thriving agriculture industry, it is undeniable that agriculture is the foundation of Pakistan’s economy and continues to play a significant part in the socio-economic growth of the nation. This sector, which occupies 22 million hectares, or roughly 25% of the nation’s land area, supports 65-70% of the people, employs 37.4% of the labor force, and generates 24% of the GDP. Pakistan is one of the world’s leading producers of rice, wheat, chickpeas, okra, mangoes, guavas, cotton, sugarcane, and dairy products, among other crops, fruits, vegetables, and livestock. Both the export industry and the home economy benefit greatly from this diversity.

In 2023-2024, Pakistan’s agricultural exports reached a remarkable $8 billion, led by cereal exports, particularly rice, which generated $4.3 billion. Known for its high quality and compliance with international standards, Pakistani rice is exported extensively to markets in the European Union and GACC countries. Mangoes, dates, citrus fruits, potatoes, and onions are also prominent contributors to agricultural exports, catering to markets in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, China, Afghanistan, and Malaysia. The country’s strategic location and abundant natural resources position it as a key player in global agro-trade.

The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) has been instrumental in unlocking the export potential of the agricultural sector. Its Agro & Food Division focuses on diversifying supply chains, enhancing global marketing, and driving product and market development. TDAP’s efforts in organizing international delegations and exhibitions have brought global recognition to Pakistan’s agricultural products. Moreover, the division addresses industry challenges through research, consultation, and policy advocacy, equipping exporters with the tools to compete in global markets.

Looking ahead, TDAP is set to host the FOODAG Manufacturing Show in 2025, a global platform that will showcase the latest innovations in food manufacturing. This event is expected to attract leading industry professionals and innovators from around the world, fostering partnerships and investments that will further strengthen Pakistan’s agro-economy.

Pakistan’s agro-food sector has demonstrated resilience and growth over the years. For instance, rice exports reached $3 billion in 2023-2024, supported by the development of high-yield varieties. The $386 million worth of meat exports to GCC nations highlights the untapped potential of value-added livestock products. Similarly, fruits and vegetables, including mangoes, dates, and citrus, contribute significantly to the export portfolio, finding markets in the UK, UAE, and Germany.

The seafood industry, with over 1,000 kilometers of coastline and more than 50 international-standard processing facilities, is another cornerstone of Pakistan’s export economy. In 2023-2024, seafood exports, including prawns, crabs, and fish, amounted to $414 million, with key markets in China, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s economy, providing livelihoods to millions, boosting GDP, and serving as a critical export driver. Through initiatives like FOODAG Manufacturing ’25, TDAP is ensuring that Pakistan’s agricultural sector continues to innovate, expand, and compete globally. By tackling challenges,  encouraging innovation, and enhancing international market access, TDAP is paving the way for a prosperous future for Pakistan.
